Needle Felted Santas

We love Christmas here on Pleasant Ridge.  In fact, some of our Christmas treasures are lovingly displayed all year 'round.  As you might expect, many of our decorations are handmade and childhood creations are given special honors.

"When I was a child, my favorite ornament on our Christmas tree was a Santa made from cotton batting that had been my dad's when he was a boy.  It was no wonder that when my bear-maker friends introduced me to the ancient art of needle felting, I saw Santas!" Peggy shares.

"I have spent a lot of time researching antique and vintage images and figures of Santa and also the interpretations of modern Santa artists.  With that background, I have developed my own style.  Needle felting allows me the freedom to realize my vision."

Needle felting is accomplished by placing loose carded wool fibers on a protective foam pad and poking and coaxing the fibers with a sharp barbed needle until they lock and form a mass that you can sculpt into a three dimensional figure.  Even with practice, it takes hours of work to produce a detailed wool sculpture.

Peggy's needle felted Santas are built on a wire armature so they are fully poseable.  Their costumes are built on and also needle felted.  Their eyes are tiny beads and their faces are enhanced by hand-coloring

Larger Santas (6-7") typically carry needle felted teddy bears or feather tree sprigs.  Some carry needle felted giraffes, elephants, bunnies, cats and dogs.  Smaller Santas (4-5") also carry feather tree sprigs or miniature bottle brush trees.  Santa Bears are also available.
